Seasons
“I always find myself
writing about you.
Even if I don’t mean to.
I could try writing about
the seasons
and how beautiful they are,
but I know I’d end up
feeding you into the words.
About how I met you in the spring,
fell for you in summer,
loved you in autumn,
and lost you in winter.
I write about you because
I can’t tell you what I want to say.
So the paper feels it instead.
Because the truth is,
if I tried to tell you,
it wouldn’t come out the same.
How I can’t breathe when
I smell you on my clothes.
How I stopped listening to the
radio in case our song comes on.
How I sit in the shower
and wait for the crying to stop
before I can get out and face the world again, without you.
And how I used to laugh
at girls who would, say, stop
eating because of a guy.
But, darling, I would starve
to hear you say, “I love you, too.”
Do you see what I mean?
Yes.
The seasons change now,
and you’re still gone.
You’re just gone.”
